Their cashmere sock yarn is hand painted by Kerrie in the peace and quiet of the Cambridgeshire countryside. Surrounded by horses, farms and open fenland, she finds the restful inspiration she needs to create new combinations of colours and textures in their yarns.
Each dye lot is a serendipitous one off, this means that there is only a limited quantity of the yarns available but that helps to preserve the individuality of whatever you choose to make. In a world of mass produced conformity, Hip Knits celebrates individuality, craftsmanship, and creativity.
The HipKnits sari silk is hand spun from shredded sari remnants, this extraordinary yarn has vibrant colour and texture. It is hand spun by women in Nepal, many of whom are refugees or have been widowed, abandoned, or rescued from forced prostitution. Combining their traditional skills has created an empowering cottage industry for them and a beautiful yarn for you. Each skein is individual and different from the rest resulting in a one of a kind finished garment that you won't find anywhere else.

What is your dream yarn?
I love working with yarns that have a story behind them instead of commercially produced yarns. Handspun yarn is gorgeous to work with as it is totally individual and unique. I also love luxurious fibres so something hand spun in a cashmere and silk blend would be perfect.
What is your dream knitting project?
I mainly knit for other people, I find that children are great fun to design and knit for. I love projects that are quick and easy to complete, brightly coloured and unique in some way. This is why many of the projects that I knit are either from my own designs or using handspun or other one of a kind yarn. I love to make shawls and blankets for babies so I think that would be my dream, a beautiful blanket in hand painted cashmere or silk. Perfect for a new arrival!
